A Conversation With Spirit
The Sun is almost down. This day is fading at the edges and its color is draining away. I worked hard today, though I hardly feel that much was accomplished. And yet, I feel mostly very grateful as I look out at the twilight sky. In the work I do, I witness the amazingly complex stories of human beings living their lives here on earth. I see both the beautiful and the terrible.
I'm waiting for the Essay to come. Not a whisper or a clue has come yet. Not even a glimmer of an idea has entered my mind. Lord, Dear Counselor, I’m trusting you to send it, as you have done so many times before. Please speak to me now, in this gentle twilight, of the words you will have me write. Show me what it will be, if it be your will. If not, then I’m satisfied to wait. I know I can trust you, even when I am afraid to trust myself. My ability is unreliable and fragmented at best, but your loving wisdom is certain and sure. What will you have me write about this time?
Too many to tell. And complicated. What troubles my mind and my heart a lot lately is the way the world has become so lawless, with so much cruelty, and war, and so many people who seem to be truly and violently insane.
Well. I worry, and sometimes fear, that the world I love so much is destroying itself - or rather, we human beings are destroying it and each other. I can’t even begin to understand that. How is it that people, who I know are all the sons and daughters of God, can do such horrible things? Like murders and maiming, and exploding the living bodies of children. This does not fit into my understanding of God/ Spirit/ Universal Consciousness. I have read that what we think we see on earth, is all illusion, but that doesn’t give me much comfort. What will you say of this Lord? To help me understand?
Well, no, not really. I’ll read it again and try to understand... It seems like you are saying that all our lives are sort of like a practice or a game anyway, and not real. And I know the soul is not damaged by what happens to the body. But what IS real then? And if it’s all a game, does anything really matter?
Why though, does anyone want misery and pain? Why would anyone choose insanity?
I know that this is true, and I know that I am never helpless; that I am and we all are the co-creators of our lives. And yet, I am still, sometimes, confused and afraid. The world seems to be more and more dangerous. Please keep me safe. How can I know that I am safe?
"As long as anyone believes that violence is a solution to anything, there will be violence." When we believe in killing the killers, that doesn't end killing; we just become the new “killers” and invite more revenge and more killing. This pattern plays out today in the Middle East but also in the neighborhoods of civilized countries all over the word. There is a shocking increase in domestic violence, in the family, between spouses, between lovers and friends, and even children; it’s on the Nightly News. Who is responsible? We are.
The world we live in didn’t happen by accident. It came from an unchangeable, eternal, unfailing universal law: What we plant and cultivate in the universal ground of thought must manifest in our personal lives and in the world beyond our individual thought.
Thought has great power, greater than we know. The apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians said: “...whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” – Philippians-8 RSV
If you are embracing thoughts of fear, anger, hatred, revenge, resentment, jealousy, or victimization and helplessness, you are inviting violence to manifest in your own life in some form. And believing that you are helpless will guarantee you helplessness in your life. Holding or repeating thoughts of harm - to anyone - invites violence into your personal physical life.
If those things are not what you truly want for yourself, you must stop giving harbor to those thoughts - stop fearing and stop fixating on hurt, because that will surely bring it into your life. Whoever you are, whatever you have done or failed to do, you deserve better.
Take faith in yourself, for God has had faith in you, and the gift is already given: the power to create and manifest any life you choose. Anything you want to have, to do, or to be, is possible and available to you, if you have faith. It is ready now and waiting to be manifest. But what you believe, empowers your life, for better or for worse.
You can choose and believe in what you want instead of what you don’t want, and that means becoming aware of what you have been believing and choosing. In truth we are all constantly choosing, whether we know it or not. Seek to know it, and decide to choose what you really want in your life and in the world.
This simple exercise of heart and mind has greater power than you can possibly imagine, until you try it and see it for yourself. All through the day, take notice of what you are thinking. Become Aware. Even in the smallest moments, what you’re thinking and believing right now is what you’re creating, not only for your own life, but also for the cosmic consciousness of humankind.
If you find that your thoughts sometimes reflect fear or anger - even if it’s completely justified - stop yourself and choose a new thought. Choose a kinder one, a happier one, and that is what will begin to manifest in the daily events and circumstances of your life - more kindness to you and from you, more happiness for you and for those around you. It’s not the way of the world, it’s the Way of Spirit, and Spirit/God/universal consciousness is the power that moves the universe and everything that’s in it. Turn your thoughts to something that you like or love or desire in your life, simply believe that it is out there waiting for you to call, and it will begin to come forth, starting now.
Every human being has the innate power to change anything that needs to be changed in your life, to strengthen anything that needs to be strengthened in you, and to discard and remove anything that does not reflect the highest and best of you, a beloved son or daughter of the God of the universe (no matter what Name you have come to call Her/Him/It). And when you change your way of thinking, you have changed your way of being, and more – you are changing the nature and consciousness of the world and beyond.
You are not alone in this. Billions of others quietly feel as you do, that the world and its ways are not as they could be. One mind at a time, one heart at a time, influences the world, even in ways we cannot understand yet we know are true. Decide to be the person you could be. You can make a difference, starting right now. Change your habits of thought and you change not only your own life, but our world. You are needed now. Begin.
